life in the Sunset

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

Today was probably the most gorgeous day I’ve seen in SF. That’s not saying much as I’ve been here for all of a five days but it was the first day that wasn’t entirely cloudy. While making my breakfast, I noticed a hint of sunshine reflecting off our neighbor’s windows. Could it be? Sun in the Sunset?

I immediately ran to the front of the house and looked out to see a beautiful blue sky emerging from behind the normal morning gray. Yes, it was going to be a good day.

Maui summoned me to the front of the house later in the day to observe the sunset, or as much as we could see given that there is a row of houses blocking our view of the ocean. Here’s the evidence.

Of course, it still gets pretty damn cold at night so I went to work on my second DIY fabric-related project (the first was a set of curtains because my landlord is too cheap to put up anything). This time it was a little repair job on a pair of pajama pants I inherited from Allan back in the Friendship Club days (a.k.a. sometime in 2002). I haven’t had much use for them since living in Berkeley because the heater always worked in Davis, but now they are definitely a necessity. Anyway, after struggling with a needle and thread for about fifteen minutes, I ended up with this. Sure, it might look a third-grader with significantly impaired motor skills created this but I’m proud nonetheless.

I really hope this whole medical school thing works out because I don’t think I could cut it as a seamster.

results from a random Google search

So I was trying to figure out something on Google and ended up looking for writings about how funny/amusing the SF scenesters can be. Anyway, Google decided it’d be helpful to include some image search results as well, including this gem.

I heart Google Image Search.

P.S. I’m going to bed now… really.

Confessions of a new San Franciscan

Sunday, August 27th, 2006

I’m well on my way to spending my third night in this crazy city and things are, well, crazy. A list of things with which I am still struggling:

  • finding my way home from various points in the city
  • understanding why the “Sunset District” is called just that (I have yet to see any sun, let alone any sunsets)
  • parking on sloped surfaces, especially in front of my neighbor’s driveway
  • the winter-like cold that seems to prevail, even in August

Tomorrow is my first day at San Francisco State in their post-bac program so I should probably get to bed.

Stealing a Signal

It’s 1:32am according to the clock on my iBook and I’m typing this from the hood of a car that doesn’t belong to me. Yes, it’s that time again: I’m homeless. Mike, Jake, Mauricio and I are searching San Francisco for an apartment this weekend.
Tonight took us to a barbeque at a friend of a friend’s place in SF, and then we all split up to go our separate ways for the evening. Currently they’re all on their way back to an apartment in the complex just a few feet away from me, but until they get back I’ll be stuck out here.
I’m starting to wonder if typing an entry for this blog is such a good idea given that someone could really just walk up to me and steal my laptop. Oh well, I’ll take my chances.
Now for the photographic evidence:

This post brought to you by the following:

1. The hood of a nameless early 90s model Honda Accord
2. “Tom’s FLAN”, an unsecured wireless access point (Thanks, Tom)
3. Lots of free time.

Heck yeah I’m ready!!

I’m a Google News junkie. I read it all the time but that also probably has a lot to do with the fact that its also my homepage on Firefox. Anyway, one of today’s top headlines was the following:

Cheap Canadian gas

(artistic emphasis mine)

While in LA I’ve noticed that northern California definitely has cheaper gas, so $1.25 sounds pretty good to me. Unfortunately, that’s the price in Canada (damn you Calgary Sun, damn you!!) and that’s also probably per liter.

Lame.

What ever happened to the electric car?

Bay Area weekend pictures

A few days late, but here they are:

Pictures from the weekend in the Bay

Oh, and fun with Apple’s Photobooth. It was definitely Greg’s idea, and a great one at that.

I swear I’m still working on choosing the right shots from Russia. It should be up in a few days.

Mothers always know

Thursday, August 3rd, 2006

I just got back to Santa Barbara earlier this evening (or should I say late last night) for the impending Fiesta celebration. After stopping by at Mike’s place for some BBQ leftovers, I came home and unpacked my car with the assistance of Mauricio.

A while later after Maui left, my Mom comes upstairs to check in. The first thing she says is “You look thinner”.

Any explanation I have for her won’t be meaningful, so I just blame all the moving around.
